How do we do it?

 

- Kids and teachers sit in a circle or U shape to make everyone equal and able to face each other during discussion. This creates equality in the classroom, as well as accountability. Accountability means everyone has to be prepared and participate in order to be part of the discussion. 

학생과 선생님은 모든 개개인이 동등함을 인지하여 토론하는 동안 서로 마주 볼 수 있도록 동그라미 또는 U자형으로 앉습니다. 이를 통해 책임감뿐만 아니라 교실에서 평등을 가져옵니다. 책임감은 모든 이가 토론에 있어 준비하고 적극적으로 참여해야 함을 의미합니다.

​기존 선생님이 학생들에게 강의식으로 정보를 알려주고 학생들은 궁금한 점을 선생님에게 질문하는 방식이 아닌, 학생들이 함께 둘러 앉아 하나의 주제에 대한 개인의 의견을 이야기하고, 상대방의 의견에 경청하는 방법이라고 볼 수 있습니다.

 선생님은 기본적인 요약부터 비판적 사고까지 학생들에게 토론의 주요 포인트를 안내합니다.

- part of the novel writing will be done in class. All of the critical thinking will be done together while focusing on different sentence structures for speaking and writing.
Novel 에서의 활동 중 일부는 수업 시간에 진행됩니다. 말하기와 쓰기를 위한 서로 다른 문장 구조에 초점을 맞추면서 다양한 비판적 사고 연습을 합니다.

- Students will take notes in the older grades (3-6)

- Everyone will need to read BEFORE class. Therefore, for Novels, we will be doing a REVIEW style. All other subjects in Fiction will remain as a PREVIEW style, meaning they will read and see the material for the first time in class with the teacher for vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing. But for NOVELS, the students must read BEFORE coming to class.

그래서 소설의 경우 Review 스타일로 진행하도록 하겠습니다. 소설의 다른 모든 과목들은 Preview 스타일로 남아있을 것인데, 이것은 그들이 어휘, 문법, 독해, 그리고 작문을 선생님과 함께 수업에서 처음으로 자료를 읽고 보게 된다는 것을 의미합니다.

그러나 소설의 경우, 학생들은 수업에 오기 전에 읽어야 합니다.

- Students will learn actively, instead of passively ("passive learning" means listening to a lecture or memorizing information. "Active learning" means taking notes, discussing, or responding to other students' ideas.)

학생들은 수동적인 학습이 아닌 능동적으로 학습하게 됩니다. 수동적인 학습은 강의를 듣거나 정보를 암기하는 것을 의미합니다. 적극적 학습은 다른 학생들의 생각을 필기하거나 토론하거나 응답하는 것을 의미합니다.

- Students will be prepared to engage more deeply in class, whatever the subject or curriculum. These will be skills students will need to succeed in primary school, secondary school, university, business and their future career. 

학생들은 어떤 과목이나 교과 과정이든 수업에 더 깊이 참여할 준비가 될 것입니다. 이것들은 학생들이 초등학교, 중학교, 대학교, 사업 그리고 그들의 미래 직업에서 성공하기 위해 필요한 기술입니다.

*자신의 의견을 제대로 말할 수 있는 능력

하크네스 테이블에서는 자신이 다른 사람의 의견에 동의하는지, 다른 생각을 가지고 있다면 나의 생각을 설득해야 하기 때문에 자연스럽게 그에 필요한 언어 능력, 표현 능력, 발표 능력을 키우고, 또한 상대방에게 질문을 해야 하기 때문에 논리적인 사고를 통해 비판적인 질문을 할 수 있는 능력을 키울 수 있습니다.

*상대방의 의견을 경청하는 자세

토론을 할 때, 나의 의견을 이야기하기 위해서는 상대방이 어떤 이야기를 하는 지를 알아야 하기 때문에, 상대의 의견을 충분히 경청합니다 이러한 방법을 통하여 학생들은 자연스럽게 나와 다름을 인정할 수 있는 존중과 다양성의 중요함을 인정하게 됩니다.

*자기 주도 학습 능력

토론을 하기 위해서는 주제에 대한 충분한 예습이 필요합니다. 수업에 적극적으로 참여를 하기 위해 학생들은 스스로 자신의 의견을 뒷받침해줄 충분한 자료, 논문, 사전 지식 등을 학습하고 토론을 통해 다른 학생들과 함께 답을 찾아갑니다. 또한 책을 읽은 후의 토론이 많기 때문에 독서가 모든 수업의 기본이며, 자연스럽게 책을 많이 읽습니다.

*혼자가 아닌 같이의 중요성

하크네스 테이블에서는 주제에 대한 답이 정해져있지 않습니다.

학생들은 서로에게 질문을 하고 답변을 하며 서로의 지식과 생각을 배우고 충분한 대화를 통해 주제에 대한 다양한 의견을 종합하여 해답을 찾아갑니다. 하크네스 방법의 교육은 나혼자 아는 답을 맞추는 것이 아니라 학생들이 함께 결론을 찾아가는 과정을 중요시합니다.

많은 장점들 중에서는 토론 수업을 경험한 모든 사람들이 공통적으로 이야기하는 가장 큰 효과는 바로 '인성'입니다.

​스스로 답을 찾는 교육인 하크네스 방법의 효과로 많은 보딩 스쿨들이 하크네스 방법을 교과 과목 수업방식에 채택하여 사용하고 있으며, 존중,배려,이해,교양,시직 등을 꾸준히 학습하고 다양한 능력을 겸비한 인재들을 배출하고 있습니다.

Breakdown of Goals by Grade:

 

Grade 1: 

• Students will focus on developing listening skills. They should be rewarded for listening carefully to their classmates and adding an idea related to what has been said. 

 • Students will learn how to link their ideas together (with the help of the teacher)

 • Students will learn to support answers by providing explanations/ reasons. 

 

 Grade 2: 

• Students will continue to hone their listening skills. 

• Students will be asked to give specific examples to support their answers. 

• Teachers will start to teach exact phrases for when they are adding ideas or asking questions in clas

These are called SOFT SKILLS (how to speak formally in a class setting, showing respect to the other speaker, or to go from one idea to the next, etc.)

 

Grade 3: 

• There will be further practice on the skills learnt in grades 1 and 2. 

 • Students will now be expected to take notes about their novel reading before class. 

• Students will also be asked to take notes during Harkness discussion about what their classmates are saying (spaces for these notes are provided in the Session Book). 

 

Grade 4: 

• Students will be asked to mark their books with exact quotes and passages they want to talk about using highlighters, pens, etc.

• Students will be expected to use the skills learned in grades 1-3  actively and independently

 

Grade 5-6: 

• All of the above, in addition to comparing different texts, using the Harkness Method to discuss ideas outside the books sourced from media, the internet, articles, etc.
